چکیده

Ambisonics, a sound field synthesis and reproduction technique, has shown promising results in conveying three-dimensional spatialized sound. Ambisonic encodings directly describe the spatial properties of sound fields without reference to the reproduction system. Precise regeneration of a sound field requires a large number of loudspeakers arranged so as to adequately sample all directions; this is referred to as a regular layout. It is not difficult to find a decoding matrix to reproduce Ambisonic recordings using uniformly distributed loudspeakers. Nevertheless, evenly locating a large number of loudspeakers is not feasible in most scenarios. Irregular arrays, however, are known to lead to ill-conditioned and singular re-encoding matrices. We propose a method for accurate reproduction of high order Ambisonic recordings over irregular loudspeaker arrays. Our approach consists of three stages which aim to exploit any regularities of the array, while using asymmetrically located loudspeakers to expand the listening volume. We evaluated our proposal using an irregular 157-channel loudspeaker array. Comparisons with mainstream decoding methods were conducted. The proposed scheme results in an overall increase in the size of the listening volume.

Ambix - a Suggested Ambisonics Format

Ambisonics is a 3D audio surround rendering and representation approach based on spherical harmonics with loudspeaker independent transmission channels. Although it was developed in the seventies and the techniques are well known, there are disagreements how to normalize, store and exchange Ambisonic data. This paper’s mission is to propose a standard for the Ambisonics community and it should ...

The Generation of Panning Laws for Irregular Speaker Arrays Using Heuristic Methods

Currently, the ITU standard surround sound speaker arrangement is based on an irregular 5 speaker array. However, this may change to an irregular 7 speaker array (as is now the standard on computer hardware) or more in the future. The Ambisonic system, pioneered by Micheal Gerzon, among others, in the late 1960’s, is very well suited to situations where the end system speaker configuration is n...

Ambisonics Equivalent Panning

In Ambisonics sound is encoded and stored in multichannel sound files and is decoded for playback. In the enand decoding process complicated functions are used. In this paper panning functions equivalent to the result of enand decoding are presented which can be used for real-time panning in an arbitrary high ambisonic order. In the function equivalent to the socalled in-phase decoding the orde...

Objective Localisation Measures in Ambisonic Surround- sound

When designing sound spatialisation systems, localisation accuracy is of great importance, i.e. how well the reproduction of the sound source corresponds to the original recording particularly with respect to source positioning. Ambisonic surround-sound is one such spatialisation system. In this work the two major psychoacoustic mechanisms Interaural Time Difference (ITD) and Interaural Level D...

Spatial Sound Encoding Including Near Field Effect: Introducing Distance Coding Filters and a Viable, New Ambisonic Format

Higher Order Ambisonics have been increasingly investigated in the past years, and found promising as a rational, scalable and flexible way to encode, transmit and render 3D sound fields. Nevertheless, studies concerning virtual source imaging or natural 3D sound encoding mainly focussed on the directional encoding of plane waves, and neglected the near field effect of finite distance sources t...
